Groede Podium, Recreation area and bunker park in Groede, Netherlands
Groede Podium is a recreation and play area built on the grounds of a former military complex with eleven bunkers constructed between 1942 and 1944. The site combines historical structures with modern play features including log climbing structures, hanging bridges, and a water play area.
German forces built eleven bunkers on this site between 1942 and 1944 during the Second World War and camouflaged them as regular buildings. The disguised structures with painted doors and windows functioned as a hidden military base until the end of the war.
The site shows how a community transformed a former military installation into a place of memory and play for families. Visitors can still see the painted doors and windows on the bunkers that tell the story of wartime camouflage.
The grounds are easily accessible on foot and open to visitors of all ages, with plenty of room for exploration and play. An on-site restaurant offers drinks and meals if you need a break during your visit.
Some of the bunker buildings like Villa Saarland and Villa Freundlich still retain original ceiling frescoes from their time as a hospital facility. These artistic details remain visible today within the restored structures.
