Proveniershuis, Residential courtyard complex in Haarlem, Netherlands
Proveniershuis is a residential complex in Haarlem arranged around a central courtyard with pathways and a historic water pump at its center. The buildings form a contained layout with accesses on different sides.
This site began as Sint Michielsklooster in 1414 before Protestant forces expelled the nuns in 1578. The grounds were then converted into a training facility for archers.
Unlike typical charity hofjes, this complex operated on a principle of substantial financial contribution from residents in exchange for housing and meals for life. This made it an exclusive residence for the more affluent rather than for those in need.
Access is through the monumental gate at Grote Houtstraat 140 or via a side entrance with a historic corridor. Keep in mind that this is an active residential area and visitors should be respectful during any visit.
From 1745 to 1749, Finnish giant Daniel Cajanus resided here while the building functioned as a men's lodging house. His exceptional height of 2.34 meters made him a notable resident of that era.
