Kazemattenmuseum, Military defense museum in Kornwerderzand, Netherlands.
The Kazemattenmuseum is a military museum at Kornwerderzand, Netherlands, housed inside a series of original concrete bunkers along the Afsluitdijk. The site includes command posts, gun emplacements, and combat rooms that visitors can walk through.
The bunker complex was built in the late 1920s as part of the Dutch coastal defense system. In May 1940, soldiers stationed here held back a much larger German force, marking one of the few successful Dutch resistance actions of that period.
The exhibitions show personal objects left by soldiers who were stationed here, including uniforms, tools, and handwritten notes. These items give a direct sense of what daily life inside the bunkers looked like during wartime.
Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes since you will walk between several bunkers and climb stairs along the way. Some interior areas are low and narrow, so visitors with limited mobility should keep this in mind before going in.
One of the exhibits is an original mirror system from the 1930s that was connected to a searchlight used to scan the water at night. The system still works today, showing how simple mechanical solutions were put to use for military purposes at the time.
