Kazemattenmuseum, Military defense museum in Kornwerderzand, Netherlands.
Kazemattenmuseum consists of several concrete bunkers positioned along the Afsluitdijk, displaying military equipment and fortification systems built in the 1930s. The site includes command posts, gun emplacements, and other combat stations that give a complete picture of the defensive line from that era.
The fortification was built in the late 1920s as part of the defense against potential attack from the sea. In May 1940 it became a crucial point when Dutch soldiers at this location managed to delay and resist a far larger German force.
The exhibitions feature personal accounts from soldiers who served at this location, along with everyday objects showing how men lived and worked inside the bunkers during wartime. Visitors gain insight into the daily routines and challenges these defenders faced while protecting the coastline.
Wear comfortable shoes since you will walk between different bunkers and climb several sets of stairs. Some interior areas require bending and navigating narrow passages, so consider your physical comfort and mobility before visiting.
Among the bunkers visitors can see an original mirror reflection system from a 1930s searchlight that was used to illuminate the area at night. This technical system still works and shows how engineers of that era created practical solutions with simple but effective means.
