Hinderstein

Hinderstein is a brick residence featuring a slate tent roof and neo-Gothic windows in Wijk bij Duurstede. The building displays multiple construction phases evident in the stepped gables of its different sections.

The site began around 1300 when Hinder van Wulven established the original structure in this region. Later expansions added new wings that transformed the building's layout over subsequent centuries.

The name derives from Hinder van Wulven, the original founder, and remains embedded in local place names today. Visitors can trace this connection between the historical figure and the regional identity of the area.

The site is best visited during warmer months when outdoor areas are fully accessible and pleasant to explore. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the grounds may have uneven surfaces.

Beneath the residential tower lies a medieval cellar featuring its original barrel vault and functional shooting loopholes in the walls. This hidden structure reveals the defensive features that remain preserved in the castle's underground spaces.
