Welgelegen, Rijksmonument architectural complex in Rijswijk, Netherlands.
Welgelegen is a seven-bay country house with two floors, featuring a red-tiled composite gabled roof set on a natural stone plinth with horizontal wooden panels. The grounds contain twenty-one tennis courts, multiple entrance gates, an orangery dating from 1830, and Villa Elise built around 1870.
The property took shape in 1790 when an older farmhouse dating before 1711 was renovated and redesigned. The original hall and other elements from the earlier structure were integrated into the new main building created at that time.
The Red Room displays original wall upholstery that reveals how people lived during the 18th century, and you can see this preserved interior today. The period kitchen with its cupboards, water pump, and marble flooring shows what daily life looked like in that era.
The site is located in Rijswijk and accessible through multiple entrance gates spread across the grounds. Plan enough time to explore the main building, the separate villa, and the surrounding areas at a comfortable pace.
The rear wooden facade displays a symmetrical layout with a pediment showcasing an oval window surrounded by floral motifs above a carved female head. This ornamental detail is easily missed but reveals the careful decorative planning that went into the original design.
