Botanical Garden TU Delft, Botanical garden at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
The Botanical Garden of TU Delft is a collection with thousands of plant species in different specialized greenhouses. Each section recreates different habitats: tropical rainforests, dry deserts, and Mediterranean landscapes under controlled conditions.
The garden was founded in 1917 to prepare students for careers in Dutch agriculture and colonial work. Over time it grew from a practical training site into a modern center for plant research and education.
The garden shows how nature and engineering work together, especially in a pavilion where living trees support viewing platforms. Visitors can see how this design uses plants as active structural elements.
The garden is open to visitors from March through December daily except Mondays, while winter hours are limited to weekends. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the various greenhouses and outdoor areas at a leisurely pace.
Scientists here study mangrove forests to understand how these ecosystems could serve as natural coastal protection. Their research on water movement takes place in Vietnam and demonstrates practical applications for nature conservation.
