Twickel Castle, Manor estate in Hof van Twente, Netherlands
Twickel Castle is a manor estate in Hof van Twente, Netherlands, surrounded by a water-filled moat and set within expansive grounds of forests, meadows, and streams. The central building shows elements from the 15th century and forms the heart of a parkland spanning several thousand hectares.
The Van Twickelo family first received the estate in 1347, and it remained in the hands of related noble houses for over six centuries. After 1953, management passed to a foundation that continues to oversee the property today.
The name Twickel comes from medieval Dutch and describes a fork between two watercourses, which still shapes the landscape today. Visitors notice the old trees along the paths, maintained by generations of the same families and continuing to define the appearance of the grounds into the present.
The gardens open to visitors during summer, with guided tours of the interior available on selected days. The orangery hosts a tearoom where guests can find drinks and light refreshments.
Eighty-one farms carry white shutters with black edges, a marker maintained uniformly across the entire property. This detail gives the rural buildings a connecting visual motif that runs through the whole landscape.
