Hoorneboegse Heide, Nature reserve in Hilversum, Netherlands.
Hoorneboegse Heide is a nature area on the southern edge of Hilversum, made up mainly of open heathland and grassland. Several walking trails cross the terrain, and information boards are placed along the way to help visitors find their bearings.
The area was placed under protection to keep the heathland from being overtaken by shrubs and trees, which happens quickly without active management. Grazing by cattle has been used since the early 2000s to maintain the open character that the land had for centuries.
The heathland is a familiar weekend destination for people from Hilversum who come to walk dogs, go for a run, or simply spend time outdoors. The open terrain gives it a feeling of space that is rare so close to a town.
The area can be entered from different sides, and the paths are mostly flat and easy to follow on foot. Because the terrain is open and exposed to the wind, it is worth bringing a layer of clothing even on sunny days.
The heathland is one of the few inland spots in the Netherlands where crowberry, a low-growing plant normally found near the coast, can be seen. Its presence here is considered unusual by botanists who study the region.
