Nieuwkerk, Protestant church in Dordrecht, Netherlands.
Nieuwkerk is a former church in Dordrecht with a simplified double-choir design built from stone, representing about half the size of its original medieval structure. The interior was adapted in 1986 and now serves as a kitchen and cookery shop.
The building began as St. Nikolaaskapelle in 1175 and was expanded into a hall church in 1420. It underwent major reconstruction from 1580 to 1592, taking on its current form.
The church floor displays preserved gravestones from its time as a burial ground, marking where residents of Dordrecht were laid to rest. These graves tell stories of the people who lived in the city and found their final resting place there.
The building now houses a commercial kitchen shop, so it is not accessible as a church. Visitors can observe the exterior architecture and facade to appreciate the original design of the structure from the outside.
The restoration preserved the building's exterior appearance while completely transforming the interior into commercial space. This unusual adaptation shows how historical buildings can adjust to modern needs.
