H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara, Amsterdam, Roman Catholic church building in Amsterdam, Netherlands

H.H. Nicolaas en Barbara is a Catholic church building constructed in Amsterdam in 1884 according to designs by architect Pierre Cuypers, located at the corner of Bilderdijkstraat and Da Costakade. The structure features red brick walls with yellow stone bands and intricate brickwork patterns on its towers that draw attention from the street.

The church was built in 1884 to serve the growing Catholic population in an area that had transformed from farmland into a crowded working-class district. This new construction replaced a smaller chapel dating to 1785 and reflected the city's rapid growth during the 1800s.

This church served as the spiritual center for the local Catholic community, where residents gathered for regular worship and life celebrations. It held deep meaning for working families in the neighborhood who relied on it as a gathering place for important moments.

The church sits conveniently at the corner of two main streets and is easily visible and accessible from the outside. Visitors should note that this is an active place of worship, so it is wise to check opening times and service schedules before visiting.

The interior features 4,258 hand-painted tiles covering about 60 square meters (645 sq ft) that were created by artist Joseph Witte. These tiles depict scenes from the Stations of the Cross and represent a hidden artistic treasure that many visitors miss when they pass by.
