Rioolrat, Indoor roller coaster at Avonturenpark Hellendoorn, Netherlands.
Rioolrat is an indoor roller coaster at Avonturenpark Hellendoorn, located in the town of Hellendoorn in the Netherlands, running through a darkened building decorated to resemble underground sewers. The track moves through narrow passages with sharp turns, green laser effects, and pipe-covered walls that keep riders in near-total darkness for most of the ride.
The ride was built in 1996 by Vekoma and replaced an earlier coaster made by Zierer that had used the same building. The layout and theming were completely redesigned for the new version.
The name Rioolrat means sewer rat in Dutch, which sets the tone for the whole experience before riders even board the train. Inside, the decoration uses pipes, dripping water effects, and dim green lighting to turn a coaster ride into a trip through an imaginary underground drain system.
There is a minimum height requirement to ride, so it is worth checking the park's current rules before visiting with younger children. Because the ride is indoors, the queue area stays out of direct sun, though on busy days the line can spill outside the building.
Although the ride feels entirely enclosed, the track briefly exits the building and passes through an outdoor tunnel before returning inside. This short moment outside catches most riders off guard because it arrives without warning in the middle of the experience.
