Fernsehturm Wormer, Transmission tower in Zaanstad, Netherlands
The Wormer Tower is a transmission structure standing 144 meters tall with its mast, among the highest buildings in the Zaanstreek area. It features three platforms designed to hold beam transmitters and receivers, topped with a glass observation ring.
The structure was built in 1970 by the Dutch Government Buildings Agency for PTT to serve as a radio relay station for telephone transmission. It represented part of a larger expansion of Dutch telecommunications infrastructure that took place between 1955 and 1989.
The tower has become a familiar landmark in the Zaanstreek region, shaping how locals and visitors perceive the industrial character of North Holland. Its presence reflects how infrastructure once defined the identity of Dutch communities.
The tower is visible from various points around Zaanstad and serves as a useful landmark for orientation in the area. Access to the structure itself is limited since it operates as a functioning telecommunications facility.
The facility was converted into a data center by Alticom in 2007 and subsequently acquired by Spanish telecommunications company Cellnex Telecom in 2017. This transformation demonstrates how older telecommunications infrastructure adapted to serve modern computing needs.
