Dominicuskerk, Neo-Gothic church building in central Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Dominicuskerk is a Catholic church in Amsterdam with a cruciform layout and Neo-Gothic features including pointed arches and ribbed vaults. Architect Pierre Cuypers designed the structure, and it contains an Adema organ and a Fazioli piano inside.
This church grew from a Catholic parish founded in 1621, when the community faced restrictions in the city. The present building was completed in 1893 and consecrated by Bishop Bottemanne.
The name comes from Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican order, whose community established this spiritual space in the city. Today visitors experience the building through concerts and events that give it a living, active purpose beyond traditional worship.
The church space is available for rent for concerts, lectures, weddings, and other events throughout the year. Check ahead about access and timing, as the space is frequently booked for private functions.
The original design called for an 85-meter tower to match the height of the Westertoren, but the city denied permission. This left one-third of Cuypers' architectural vision unrealized.
