De Reiger, Polder windmill in Nijetrijne, Netherlands
De Reiger is a polder drainage mill built in the Rottige Meente area to manage water levels in surrounding farmland using an Archimedes screw mechanism. The structure has been converted into a holiday residence while retaining its original milling architecture and appearance.
Built in 1871, the mill operated its drainage mechanism for around 85 years before shutting down in 1958. It gained protected monument status in 1967, recognizing its importance to local water management history.
The name reflects a connection to its water management role in the polders. Today, the space brings together historical milling traditions and contemporary hospitality, making it a meeting point between the region's agricultural past and present-day travel.
The site is best reached by car as it sits in a rural setting outside main towns and highways. Visitors should note this is a private holiday property, so access may be limited to those with prior arrangements.
Originally known simply as Mill Number 5, it received its distinctive name only after conversion to a holiday home. This renaming reflects how the building shifted from serving purely practical functions to welcoming travelers.
