Eyckenstein, Maartensdijk, Protected country estate in Maartensdijk, Netherlands.
Eyckenstein is a protected country estate in Maartensdijk that spreads across a large area with forests, agricultural fields, and a country house along Dorpsweg. The property combines historical buildings with natural landscape features and offers multiple paths for walking through its grounds.
The property started as a manor farm in the early 1600s and received a renovated house and farm building in the 1780s from Adriaan Eyck. About a century later, Elisabeth Both Hendriksen took over and reshaped the grounds following English landscape principles.
The three farms carry poetic names reflecting times of day: De Morgen, De Middag, and De Avond mean morning, noon, and evening in Dutch. These names shape how visitors understand and talk about the different parts of the estate.
The paths on the grounds are open year-round and work for walking at different paces and distances. The estate shop with local products makes visits easier on weekends when it is open.
The English landscape design that Elisabeth Both Hendriksen commissioned went against the trend of geometric French gardens at the time. This choice made the property an early example of this gardening philosophy in the region.
