Museum Drachten

Museum Drachten is an art museum housed in a former Franciscan monastery in the town center. The building contains galleries with works by contemporary and modern artists from various artistic movements.

The building was originally designed as a monastery and later converted into a town hall in 1972. Its transformation into a museum in 1996 gave the structure a new cultural role in the community.

The museum displays works from art movements like Dada and De Stijl that hold special meaning for the region. Visitors can see how Dutch artists of the 20th century connected tradition and experimentation in their works.

The museum is easily accessible on foot from the town center and offers plenty of space to explore the different galleries. Plan to spend about two hours to view the exhibitions at a comfortable pace.

The museum holds one of the country's largest collections of drinking vessels and also features the Van Doesburg-Rinsemahuis. These spaces connect art history with architectural design in an unusual way.
