Alkmaar city hall, Gothic town hall in Alkmaar, Netherlands
The Alkmaar City Hall features intricate Gothic architectural elements with detailed stone carvings across its grand exterior structure.
Between 1509 and 1520, builders constructed this municipal building, which survived the 1517 looting by Grote Pier when many archives were lost.
The building represents the evolution of Dutch local governance, transitioning from a system of multiple mayors to a single mayoral position in 1824.
While modern administrative offices operate elsewhere, the city hall continues to host council meetings, wedding ceremonies, and official municipal functions.
The structure maintains its original position on Alkmaar's main street, where it replaced a smaller town hall that once stood near Grote Kerk.
