Kleine Kerkje, Gothic church in Eygelshoven, Netherlands.
Kleine Kerkje in Eygelshoven is a church with a central tower made of Nievelsteiner sandstone and field stones in its lower sections. The building stands on elevated terrain and contains a Gothic nave with wooden furnishings from the 19th century.
Construction began in the 11th century with a defensive tower, and the Gothic nave was added in 1513. Significant renovations took place in 1614 and again in 1939.
The name refers to the modest size of this house of worship compared to larger regional churches. Visitors today can observe the craftsmanship in the wooden furnishings that fill the interior space.
The building stands at the corner of Kerkberg and Torenstraat and has held Rijksmonument status since 1966. Access is on foot via the local streets of the village.
During the 1939 renovations, Roman construction materials including milestones were discovered in the lower section of the tower. This reveals that the site had been occupied and used since ancient times.
