Sypesteyn is an estate and castle complex in Nieuw-Loosdrecht featuring stone walls, heavy wooden doors, iron hardware, and a Gothic entrance gate imported from Middelburg as a distinctive architectural element. A structure stood on this site from 1288 until Henri van Sypesteyn discovered its remains and built the current castle in 1907. His reconstruction incorporated the historical foundations while creating a new architectural vision for the property.
The rooms contain around eighty family portraits alongside Delftware and Chinese porcelain collected during the Dutch Golden Age. These pieces reveal how the family displayed their wealth and tastes through their living spaces.
The estate opens Wednesday through Saturday for guided group tours limited to 15 visitors per session between 11:00 and 17:00. Book in advance since group size is restricted and tour availability may fill quickly during peak seasons.
