Ter Borch Castle, Medieval castle in Roosteren, Netherlands
Ter Borch Castle is a castle structure from the 16th century located near the Lanterdijk road, showing traditional features of Dutch castle architecture from that period. The building was constructed using materials and techniques typical for the region at that time.
The castle was built in the 16th century and suffered destruction in 1632, forcing the castle lord Jan van Rossum to flee to Eyckholt. A fire in 1971 later damaged the site, and restoration work in the 1980s returned it to usable condition.
The De Plevits family shaped the castle for over a century starting in 1764, then passed it to the locally prominent Barbou family. These ownership changes reflect the changing fortunes of regional noble families.
The structure functions as a residential property today and holds protected monument status, meaning public access inside is not available. The nearby Lanterdijk road provides good navigation reference for reaching and locating the site.
The castle grounds connect directly to the region's first walking junction point, making it a natural starting location for regional hiking routes. This positioning links the historical structure with the area's modern walking network.
