Schellingwoude church

Schellingwoude church is a Reformed Protestant church located in the outskirts of Amsterdam with white plastered walls set upon a natural stone foundation. The structure features a distinctive eight-sided spire tower and is finished with a dark grey tiled roof.

This church was built during the early 1600s as a Protestant place of worship for the surrounding community. The building underwent major renovations in 1835 and again in 1866, which gave it its present-day form.

The interior displays a carved Renaissance pulpit from 1619 and rows of traditional wooden pews typical of Dutch Protestant design. Copper crowns and organ panels reflect the religious practices and aesthetic choices of the 17th century congregation.

The church is situated in a rural area on the edge of Amsterdam and now functions as a venue for cultural events, celebrations, and ceremonies. Visitors should expect a quieter setting away from the city center, where parking and public transport connections may be more limited.

During the devastating flood of 1916, the church building served as an emergency shelter for farm animals, revealing its importance to the community beyond religious functions. This episode shows how the structure has been adapted to local needs throughout its long history.
