Wellenseind, Nature area in Lage Mierde, Netherlands
Wellenseind is a 130 hectare nature area in Lage Mierde where the Reusel and Beekloop rivers converge, with meandering streams crossing through forested dunes and wetland zones. The landscape combines woodlands, open water, and grassland in various sections.
The estate began in 1915 when textile manufacturer Henri Van Puijenbroek purchased 32 hectares, expanding the holding to 130 hectares by 1919. This growth established the foundation for the nature area that exists today.
The land shows traces of its farming past through field divisions and old sheep structures that remain scattered across the grounds. Visitors can observe how traditional agricultural patterns coexist with present-day conservation efforts.
The area is accessed through the visitor center at Dunsedijk, which has a restaurant and shop for local products. Parking and information facilities are available at the main entrance to help you plan your visit.
The property contains a water system with locks that were originally built for carp farming and still remain visible today. These historic water structures now form a key part of the ecological system where the two rivers meet.
