Huis Bergh

Huis Bergh is a castle in Montferland with multiple towers and brick walls surrounded by moats on both inner and outer sections. The building contains chapels, gates, and courtyards that show how it was expanded and modified over the centuries.

The castle was built around 1200 and underwent many changes due to wars, fires, and repairs over the following centuries. A major fire in 1735 required extensive rebuilding that changed much of the structure.

This estate served as the seat of a powerful family for centuries, with rooms that reveal how nobility lived and conducted their affairs in the region. The furniture, paintings, and personal objects on display show daily life from different periods.

The grounds spread across forests and fields with marked walking paths that connect to neighboring natural areas and historical sites nearby. Visitors should allow time to explore the different sections and enjoy the surrounding landscape.

The 1939 restoration deliberately combined medieval and 17th-century architectural elements to preserve the building's different construction phases. This choice created an interesting blend of styles that visitors notice when moving through the rooms.
