Christus Koningkerk, Church building in Vrieheide-De Stack, Netherlands
Christus Koningkerk is a white cubic concrete structure with a separate concrete bell tower built in 1965 in Heerlen. The building displays clean geometric forms characteristic of post-war architectural design with simple, functional elements.
The building was constructed in 1965 by architect Jozef Fanchamps to replace an earlier 1928 church damaged by mining subsidence in the region. The new structure represents the post-war reconstruction period for the local area.
The exterior chapel displays a mosaic by artist Libert Ramaekers showing Jesus entering Jerusalem, created through glass brick construction that remains a defining visual feature. This artwork gives the building a distinctive spiritual character visitors can observe from outside.
The building has functioned as an archive depot and study room for the Heerlen branch of Historisch Centrum Limburg since 2023. Check ahead about access conditions since it operates as a working archive rather than a regular museum.
The building received protection status through the Beschermingsprogramma Wederopbouw 1959-1965, a systematic effort to preserve post-war reconstruction architecture. This designation makes it a recognized example of how the Netherlands protected its rebuilding-era structures.
