Strandavatnet, lake in Hol, Buskerud, Norway
Strandavatnet is a reservoir in Hol Municipality, Norway, situated at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level and covering a substantial area. The water flows to the nearby Rud power station to generate electricity and is fed by streams and rivers from the surrounding landscape.
A dam was constructed in the early 1950s that raised the water level by about 28 meters, transforming water management in the region. This structure was notable as Norway's first rock-filled dam of its kind.
You can view the dam from road FV 50 near Myrland, where it sits on the left side as you pass by. Multiple paths and trails circle the reservoir and are straightforward to walk, inviting exploration of the natural surroundings.
The water surface can freeze over during winter, creating a quiet sheet of ice where some locals skate or enjoy the snowy surroundings. This seasonal transformation offers visitors a different experience of the landscape depending on when they arrive.
