Hallingskarvet National Park

Hallingskarvet National Park is a large protected area in central Norway featuring a high plateau landscape with steep cliff faces and vast open terrain. The park contains moorlands, small lakes, and streams, with trails ranging from easy walks to challenging mountain routes.

The park was created in 2006 to protect the natural highland region spanning three municipalities. This decision marked the growing recognition of the ecological importance of this mountain landscape.

The mountain paths include stone stairways constructed by Nepalese Sherpa workers, connecting different sections of the 450-square-kilometer protected area.

The park can be accessed from several entry points, with the main ones easily reached from Geilo and nearby valleys. Most trails are well-marked, and the best hiking season is from June to October when snow coverage is minimal.

The northern sections feature glacial cirques and cliff faces that provide habitat for Arctic foxes, a rare sight in southern Norway. These elusive predators use the rocky heights as hunting grounds, particularly when tracking mountain hares.
