Vøringfossen, Mountain waterfall in Eidfjord, Norway
The falls drop in several stages over a steep rock face, with water splitting into narrow streams before plunging into the deep valley below. The surrounding landscape is bare rock covered with moss and low plants, and mist often rises up to the viewing platforms. On some days the flow becomes a thin veil, on others it roars through the gorge with full force.
In the early years of the twentieth century, a road was built through the area, bringing more visitors and making it one of the most recognized natural wonders in Norway. Plans for a hydropower project in the nineties sparked fierce debate, but the government eventually decided to leave the falls untouched. Since then, new walkways and viewpoints have been constructed to improve pedestrian access without disturbing the natural setting.
Norwegian writer Peter Christen Asbjørnsen mentioned the falls in his storytelling, which helped draw travelers from across Europe during the nineteenth century. Today the site is regarded as part of national identity, especially for people from the Hardanger region, who see it as a symbol of the harsh beauty of their homeland. Hikers and photographers often arrive at sunrise to catch the light breaking through mist.
The main viewpoints are reached by paved paths, but some sections are steep and can become slippery in rain. Anyone planning to cross the bridge should wear sturdy shoes, as the walkway can be damp. Early in the day tends to be quieter, while afternoons often get busier, especially in summer. Warm clothing is recommended, even on sunny days, because wind funnels through the valley and the temperature drops quickly.
A narrow rainbow often appears in late morning when the sun hits the mist directly, and photographers sometimes wait hours for that moment. Local legend tells of treasure hidden deep in the valley, but no one has ever tried to search for it because the current is too dangerous. Some visitors report feeling the vibration of the falling water through the ground when standing close enough to the edge.
