Lønahorgi, Mountain summit in Voss, Norway
Lønahorgi is a mountain summit near Voss that rises 1410 meters above sea level and features polished rock faces and hanging valleys carved by ancient glaciers. The terrain on its eastern slopes shows clear glacial shaping, with steep valleys running northward from the main peak.
The mountain has long served as a climbing objective for locals who developed traditional routes to reach the summit. The northeast face became the focus of organized climbing activity, with its routes being formalized and equipped over time.
The scattered farm settlements visible during the walk reflect how people have lived and worked in these mountains for centuries. Today, visitors see traditional rural architecture integrated into the steep landscape, showing how communities adapted to this terrain.
The round trip hike takes between 6.5 and 8 hours from either the Voss Folk Museum or Bavallen trailheads, covering roughly 20 kilometers of terrain. Sturdy hiking boots are essential because the path becomes rocky and you will cross streams on the descent.
After descending, hikers discover natural pools in the Breimo river where they can cool off before heading back to the trailhead. These cold water pools offer a refreshing reward on warm days after hours of climbing uphill.
