Badoc Church, Roman Catholic basilica parish church in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, Philippines
Badoc Church is a parish church in Badoc on Luzon, Philippines, built from stone with thick walls and large buttresses to withstand earthquakes. The interior features colorful tile floors in green, yellow, and cream, an ornate gilt retablo as the main decoration, and a turquoise and gold altar and pulpit.
The church was founded in 1591 by Augustinian missionaries and became an official parish church dedicated to St. John the Baptist in 1714. Later, in 2018, it received the title of minor basilica in recognition of its historical importance.
The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and has served the community as a gathering place for worship and celebrations for centuries. Visitors come to pray before the Virgin Milagrosa statue, brought from Japan centuries ago, which holds deep meaning for local devotion.
The site is easy to explore with stairs and open areas, including a separate bell tower and a space with old stone ruins behind the church. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and note that active worship services take place, which may affect access.
The church houses the Virgin Milagrosa statue, brought secretly from Nagasaki, Japan around 1620, which survived the 1614 massacre that destroyed many other churches. This rare statue was crowned in 2018 and a replica was later taken to Rome and Milan to share its story worldwide.
