Rawa Mazowiecka is the administrative center of Rawa County in Łódź Voivodeship and is crossed by the Rawka River. The ruins of a 14th-century castle stand prominently on the riverbank and shape the town's character.
The town received city rights in 1321 and became the capital of Rawa Voivodeship starting in 1462. It held this role as a regional administrative seat until the end of the 18th century.
