Poddąbie, Coastal village in Gmina Ustka, Poland
Poddąbie is a small village in Gmina Ustka, situated on the Baltic coast in the Pomeranian region of northern Poland. It sits just behind the beach dunes, with pine woodland on one side and direct access to the sandy shore on the other.
The area was part of historical Pomerania, a region that passed through Germanic, Swedish and Prussian control before becoming part of Poland after World War Two. After the war, the local German-speaking population was replaced by Polish settlers, giving the village its present character.
The village draws visitors in summer who come for the beaches and the coastal paths through the dunes and pine trees. Fishing has shaped daily life here for generations, and small boats can still be seen along the shore.
Summer is the best time to visit, as the beach and coastal trails are at their most accessible and the sea is warm enough for swimming. The village is very small, so it is wise to stock up on groceries and supplies in the nearby town of Ustka before arriving.
Just behind the beaches of Poddąbie lies the Slowinski National Park, where moving sand dunes slowly bury entire sections of forest as they shift inland. Visitors can spot half-buried tree trunks sticking out of the sand, a sight that feels more like a desert than a northern coastline.
