Sandomierz Castle

Sandomierz Castle, Gothic castle in Sandomierz, Poland

Sandomierz Castle is a fortress on Castle Hill, with its west wing showing Renaissance architecture, a classicist eastern facade, and an octagonal tower. The structure was built from brick and now houses a museum with historical collections.

King Casimir III the Great ordered the construction of this brick castle in 1349 after a fire destroyed the previous wooden stronghold. This new fortification became an important defensive structure in the region.

The Regional Museum inside displays collections of historical artifacts that reflect the royal significance of the region. The exhibits give a sense of how important this place was in medieval Polish history.

Access is through the main entrance at Zamkowa Street, where guided tours are regularly offered. It is helpful to check in advance which areas are open during your visit.

The walls contain a special rhombic pattern made with zendrówka bricks, a specific type of fired brick from medieval Polish construction. This crafted detail is a feature visitors often overlook, but it reveals the care that went into the building work.
