Saint George Basilica is a Gothic church in the southwest corner of Kętrzyn featuring two prominent towers and thick stone walls built without external buttresses. The interior impresses with ribbed vaulting that divides the space into three aisles.
Construction started in 1359 on the site of a former Teutonic watchtower and underwent major expansion between 1470 and 1485. This rebuilding phase transformed the original structure into a three-aisle hall church.
The building reflects the religious shifts that swept through the region when it transitioned from Catholic to Lutheran use in the 1500s. Visitors can observe how both faiths have left their mark on the interior decoration and furnishings.
