Nature reserve Polanki
Nature reserve Polanki is a protected forest area near Bykowce in the Sanok region, featuring old beech woodlands and rocky outcroppings. The landscape contains dense forests, rocky slopes, and small clearings that support varied habitats for plants and animals.
The reserve was established in 1996 to protect the forests and biodiversity of the region. It is part of a larger network of protected areas that help preserve the rare old-growth forests of the Carpathian region.
The name Polanki comes from the Slavic word for clearing, referring to the open spaces within the forest. Today, visitors use these areas to observe wildlife and experience the quiet character of the landscape.
Visitors should stay on marked trails and avoid disturbing wildlife; dogs are allowed if kept on a leash. It is wise to bring water and suitable footwear, as the terrain is full of rocks and roots, and spring or early summer offer the best visiting conditions.
A striking rocky formation resembles a small fortress, with a stone wall about 16 meters (52 feet) long and heights reaching up to 6 meters (20 feet). These ancient rock faces are covered with mosses and lichens, bearing signs of weathering across countless centuries.
