Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Kalisz is a brick church with Gothic elements, including a starry vault in the chancel and a baroque high altar from 1662. The interior displays a mix of different building styles that developed over centuries of use.
An original building was established after 1253 under Duke Bolesław the Pious, and the structure later underwent multiple reconstructions. In 1992, Pope John Paul II granted it cathedral status.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows holds stained glass and painted decorations that Włodzimierz Tetmajer created in 1909, bringing color and light to the interior space.
The cathedral sits in a central location in Kalisz and is easy to reach. Visitors can find guided tours on site that provide information about architectural features and historical elements.
The cathedral's high altar once displayed Peter Paul Rubens' painting 'Descent from the Cross', which disappeared during a fire in 1973. This lost artwork remains a remarkable chapter in the site's history.
