Saint Hedwig of Andechs church in Nieszawa, Gothic church in Nieszawa, Poland
Saint Hedwig of Andechs is a brick church in Nieszawa featuring a rectangular nave, two-bay chancel, and a five-story tower built in Flemish bond pattern. The structure preserves its perimeter walls, nave, chancel, northern annexes, and the original tower with multiple stories.
Construction began in 1460 and was completed by 1468, with the bishop consecrating it in 1496. The early completion dates place this among the region's significant late medieval church buildings.
The building displays Gothic vaulting in the northern chapel and features a distinctive exterior with rhomboidal patterns made from dark-colored bricks. This decorative brickwork is characteristic of regional Gothic architecture and remains a key visual element of the church.
The church remains in active use for religious services and is open to visitors outside of worship times. Be mindful of uneven historic floors and show respect when services are taking place.
A millstone is embedded in the northern wall of the tower, an unusual detail possibly linked to local practices or the building's past functions. The external facades also reveal numerous holes from the original construction scaffolding.
