Pomnik Poległych w Powstaniu Poznańskim

Pomnik Poległych w Powstaniu Poznańskim, monument in Poznań, Poland

The Monument to the Fallen of the Poznań Uprising stands at the corner of Kochanowskiego and Dąbrowskiego streets and honors those who died during the 1956 uprising. A large granite boulder forms the base, topped with a carved eagle sculpture in flight, while memorial plaques list the names of the dead and preserve the words of the uprising.

The monument was built in 1996 based on a design by Józef Petruk, initiated by the Union of Veterans of the 1956 Poznań Uprising. An original plaque was unveiled in 1990, but was stolen in 2001 and reinstalled after restoration in 2002.

The site serves the community as a gathering place for remembrance, especially on June 28 when residents come to honor those who died. It is woven into local tradition and regularly reminds visitors of the struggle for freedom that shaped the city.

The monument is accessible year-round and easily reached from both adjacent streets. It is a short walk from nearby bus stops, and visiting during early morning or evening hours often provides a quieter experience for reflection.

In 2001, the memorial plaques bearing the names of the fallen were stolen, shocking the community but motivating quick restoration. The fact that the monument was rebuilt after this incident demonstrates the community's strong bond with its history and determination to preserve memory.
