Castle of the Order of St. John in Łagów

The Castle of the Order of St. John sits on a hilltop between two lakes, built as a four-sided fortress with thick stone walls and Gothic features. Four two-story wings frame a central courtyard in Renaissance style, dominated by a tall defensive tower.

The Order of St. John began construction of this fortress in 1350 on the hilltop between the lakes. In the early 1500s, a military leader strengthened the structure by adding a new, tall defensive tower.

The rooms here show how the knights of the Order lived and worked, with chambers that reveal details of their daily routines. The Gothic design and carved vaults reflect the craft and skill invested in this fortress.

The entrance to the castle requires climbing a steep stone passageway with approximately 50 steps that narrows like a neck, leading up to the courtyard level. This dramatic ascent was originally designed for defense but today creates an exciting arrival experience for every visitor.
