Swobnica Castle, Medieval fortress in Swobnica, Poland
Swobnica Castle is a fortress built on a peninsula surrounded by lake water on three sides. The structure features a tower reaching about 31 meters high and brick walls that rise to approximately 18 meters.
The fortress was built after 1377 by the Knights Hospitallers with permission from dukes Świętobor I and Bogusław VII to defend regional borders. In the 18th century it was transformed into a hunting lodge, reflecting new ideas about how nobility lived.
The name comes from an old Slavic settlement that once existed in this location. Today visitors can see how the fortress served as a residence for noble families, especially after it became a hunting lodge.
The site is open to visitors, but it helps to walk carefully since the location near water can be wet and slippery. Restoration work since 2011 has made the main tower and east wing accessible for exploration.
In the mid-16th century the fortress housed substantial weapons including cannons, armor, and thousands of cannonballs. This arsenal shows how important this location was for regional defense.
