Studnia Szpatowców, Limestone cave in Podlesice, Poland.
Studnia Szpatowców is a limestone cave in Podlesice with two vertical shafts descending deep underground and a main passage that winds through layered rock formations. The cave has multiple natural openings and reveals different geological zones as you move deeper inside.
German soldiers discovered the cave entrance in 1944 while digging trenches, and mining operations for calcite followed between 1946 and 1951. The site served as a source of raw materials during the postwar period.
Kazimierz Kowalski documented the cave in 1949, initially naming it the Calcite Mine in Podlesice before K. Mazik renamed it Studnia Szpatowców in 1979.
Metal railings protect the entrance and slope areas to keep visitors safe from falls and accidents. Be cautious when entering due to the steep passages and significant depth of the cave.
The cave maintains a nearly constant temperature of around 7 degrees Celsius, creating ideal conditions for hibernating bats and other creatures. This stable environment underground remains unchanged regardless of the season above.
