Stobnica Castle, Modern castle in Stobnica, Poland.
Stobnica Castle is a residential building on an artificial island in Greater Poland Voivodeship, within Oborniki County. The structure rises in the middle of a forest area and consists of several towers, walls, and courtyards that spread across the entire island surface.
Construction began in 2015 based on designs by architect Waldemar Szeszuła, who led the project as a private initiative. Since then the building work has continued and repeatedly attracted attention because it brings unusual forms into a rural setting.
The name refers to the village of Stobnica and represents a private project that recreates medieval forms. Visitors see towers and walls that recall old fortresses but were built using current methods.
An educational path leads around the construction site and displays panels that explain the building progress and methods. On site there are few facilities, so visitors should bring water and snacks if they plan to spend time on the grounds.
The location near a Natura 2000 protected area led to discussions about environmental impacts and building permits. Authorities examined several times whether the structure complies with nature conservation rules, which brought the site additional attention.
