Nabi Musa

Nabi Musa is a religious neighborhood in Jericho Governorate, Palestine, with a shrine complex in the desert land east of Jerusalem. The compound includes mosque buildings, courtyards, and lodging rooms grouped around the central shrine.

Sultan Baibars built the shrine in 1269 during his construction projects in the areas he reclaimed from the Crusaders. Later rulers expanded the compound with additional rooms and facilities for pilgrims.

The name comes from the Arabic word for Moses, tied to the site. Pilgrims visit the shrine especially during religious celebrations, when worshippers gather for prayer and use the rooms for devotion and lodging.

The site sits away from main routes in the desert area between Jericho and Jerusalem and is best reached by car. Visitors should bring sun protection and enough water, as the surroundings can be open and hot.

The shrine complex once served as a resting station for Muslims returning from the pilgrimage to Mecca. Here they received food, supplies, and religious guidance on their journey north.
