Al-Shati refugee camp, Palestinian refugee camp on Mediterranean coast, Gaza Governorate, Palestinian Territories
Al-Shati is a Palestinian refugee camp located on the Mediterranean coast in the northern Gaza Strip. This settlement covers an area of around 520 dunams and houses more than 90,000 registered refugees.
The camp was founded in 1948 to provide shelter for people who came from Jaffa, Lod, and Beersheba. Authorities later ordered the demolition of shelters to modify infrastructure.
Many families in Al-Shati maintain connections to their ancestral cities through oral histories and traditional practices passed down through generations.
The camp contains schools, a health center, and workshops where residents work in manufacturing and garment production. Visitors should be aware that this is a residential area with limited freedom of movement.
In 1971, Israeli authorities demolished 2,000 shelters in the camp to create wider roads, forcing 8,000 refugees to relocate to surrounding areas.
