Snagov Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Comana, Romania
The monastery complex stands on a former island surrounded by marshland, featuring defensive walls with five towers and a central church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
Vlad Tepes established the monastery-fortress in 1461, followed by Radu Serban rebuilding it in 1588 using the remains of the original structure.
The monastery walls contain traditional Romanian religious paintings commissioned in 1609 by Radu Serban, depicting him with royal insignia among religious figures.
Located 33 kilometers from Bucharest, the monastery offers guided tours of its architectural elements, including the church, defensive towers, and surrounding gardens.
The monastery includes a 1932 mausoleum dedicated to soldiers from World War I, combining religious architecture with military memorial functions.
