Ghighiu Monastery

Ghighiu Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox sanctuary in Prahova built with a main church in Brâncoveanu architectural style featuring a trefoil floor plan and a single tower above the central nave. The complex includes residential buildings and maintained gardens with trees, flowers, and boxwood shrubs.

The site was established in the late 16th century when logofat Coresi and his wife Slavita built a wooden church. Over time, stone structures were added that continue to define the complex's layout today.

Worshippers revere a 16th-century icon of the Virgin Mary from Syria that is believed to perform miracles and stands among the monastery's most treasured possessions. The religious artwork draws pilgrims who come seeking blessing and healing.

The monastery sits about 5 kilometers from Ploiesti and is easily accessible. Visitors can explore the gardens and enjoy the peaceful setting of the religious grounds.

Behind the monastery walls flows a spring with cold water that according to local legend emerged where the Virgin Mary walked. Pilgrims gather this water, which holds a special place in folk devotion.
