Svilajnac, town and municipality in Serbia
Svilajnac is a small town in eastern Serbia situated where the Resava River flows through the area near its confluence with the Velika Morava. It functions as the administrative and commercial center for the surrounding region with a population of around 9000 people.
The region was originally inhabited by Thracians and later conquered by Romans, with documented references from 1467 describing Svilajnac as a village with about 30 houses. Over centuries the settlement expanded into a town and became important for local trade and agriculture.
The town maintains strong local traditions visible in annual celebrations like Sinđelić Days, which showcase folk customs and regional heritage. Local restaurants and homes keep traditional ways of living alive through food and everyday practices.
The town is about 100 kilometers from Belgrade and easily accessible by car, making it practical for day trips. There are various accommodation options from hotels to private lodging, and local restaurants serve traditional food for visitors to sample.
Nearby stands the Manasija Monastery, built between 1407 and 1418 and one of Serbia's most significant medieval structures with thick walls and 12 towers designed like a fortress. The monastery served as a center for copying and preserving books during difficult periods in the region.
