Dimitrovgrad, Research city in Ulyanovsk Oblast, Russia
Dimitrovgrad is an industrial city in Ulyanovsk Oblast at the confluence of the Melekes and Bolshoy Cheremshan rivers. The urban layout spreads across hilly terrain with factory complexes and residential districts.
The settlement began in 1714 as a distillery village and became a city named Melekess in 1919. The current name was introduced in 1972 during the Soviet policy of renaming cities.
The name honors Bulgarian communist Georgi Dimitrov and ties the city to Soviet-era political naming traditions. Today, families from different ethnic backgrounds maintain their languages and customs in everyday life.
The Atomic Research Institute lies within the city limits and makes it a center for nuclear technology in Russia. Factories producing auto parts, carpets, and chemical equipment offer visitors insight into the local industrial landscape.
The Soviet Union awarded the city the Order of Friendship of Peoples for its role in the industrial program. In 2016, international teams arrived for the Bandy World Championship and used the local sports facilities for their matches.
