Yefremov, Industrial center in Tula Oblast, Russia
Yefremov is a town on the Krasivaya Mecha River, 149 kilometers (93 miles) south of Tula, in Tula Oblast, Russia. The town is dominated by three large chemical plants that produce synthetic rubber, feed additives, and sulfuric acid, while Cargill operates the country's largest molasses production facility here.
A fortified settlement was established here in 1637 to protect the southern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from Crimean Tatar raids. The settlement gained town status in 1777 and developed into a regional trade center from the 19th century onward.
The settlement takes its name from Russian boyar Yefrem Mikhailovich, who served in this area during the 17th century. Many residents work in the chemical plants that have shaped daily life and local identity for decades.
The industrial plants are concentrated in the northern and western parts of town, while residential districts and public facilities lie in the southern and eastern sections. Visitors will find basic services and shops in the town center along the main streets.
The town power station began generating electricity in 1933 and ranks among the earliest combined heat and power plants built in the Soviet Union. Today, the plant supplies both industrial customers and thousands of households across the town with heat and electricity.
