Tarko-Sale, Administrative center in Purovsky District, Russia
Tarko-Sale sits on the Pyakupur River at 22 meters elevation, surrounded by subarctic landscapes and natural gas extraction facilities in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. This settlement serves as the administrative center of Purovsky District in the West Siberian region.
The settlement began in 1932 as a small outpost, receiving urban-type settlement status in 1976. It gained town classification in March 2004.
The Purovsky District Museum of History and Local Lore displays more than 26,990 items documenting natural history, ethnography, archaeology, and artistic traditions. Visitors can see how indigenous peoples of the far north have lived with the harsh environment for centuries.
Three airports serve the region: Urengoy at 120 kilometers distance, Novy Urengoy at 140 kilometers, and Noyabrsk at 230 kilometers. Travel requires preparation for extreme weather conditions in any season.
The town hosts the headquarters of Novatek, a major Russian gas producer. Temperatures swing between 34.5°C (94°F) in summer and minus 54.2°C (minus 66°F) in winter.
