Monchegorsk, Industrial city in Murmansk Oblast, Russia
Monchegorsk stretches along the shores of Lake Imandra in northwestern Russia, surrounded by the mountains of the Monchetundra Massif at 130 meters elevation.
The settlement emerged in the 1930s as Moncha-Guba before receiving town status in 1937, following the discovery of substantial copper and nickel deposits.
The name Monchegorsk originates from the Akkala Sámi word 'monche', reflecting the indigenous heritage of the Kola Peninsula region.
The city maintains regular transport connections to Murmansk, located 145 kilometers north, through railway services and the M18 federal highway.
The local Kolskaya GMK facility processes nickel, cobalt, and copper, making Monchegorsk a principal metallurgical center in the Russian Arctic region.
